Sam Williams brings his singular take on country music to Pershing Hall in Austin on Saturday, August 29. As the son of Hank Williams Jr. and grandson of country music legend Hank Williams, Sam comes from one of the most famous families in American music—but he’s building a sound and career distinctly his own.

There are famous last names in country music, and then there’s Williams.

For Sam, that name comes with nearly a century of mythology attached. His grandfather, Hank Williams, helped write the emotional vocabulary of country music. His father, Hank Williams Jr., took that legacy, plugged it in, turned it up and built an outlaw-sized career of his own.

BORN INTO COUNTRY MUSIC ROYALTY

Being the grandson of Hank Williams and the son of Hank Jr. would be enough to define most careers before they even began.

OIP 1 1

But if you come to Pershing Hall expecting a third-generation reenactment, you haven’t been paying attention.

Sam Williams has spent his career doing something considerably more interesting: figuring out what happens when you inherit one of country music’s most famous names, then decide where to take it yourself.

His music keeps country’s confessional heart intact while stretching comfortably into pop, rock, soul and contemporary territory. The voice is unmistakably country. The perspective belongs entirely to him.

That tension—between inheritance and independence—has become one of the most compelling threads running through Williams’ work.

FORGING HIS OWN SOUND

Williams’ 2021 debut, Glasshouse Children, introduced an artist willing to put vulnerability ahead of bravado. The deeply personal collection explored family, identity, heartbreak and the complicated business of becoming yourself when everyone already knows your name.

And what a name it is.

On “Tilted Crown,” Williams confronted that inheritance directly—the privilege, pressure and strange weight of being born into a country music dynasty.

More recent projects, including Act I: Scarlet Lonesome and Act II: COUNTRYSTAR, have pushed his artistic identity even further. The country foundation remains, but Williams seems increasingly uninterested in anyone else’s definition of what a Williams is supposed to sound like.

That’s exactly what makes him worth hearing now.

There are echoes of the family tree, naturally. How could there not be? But Sam’s songwriting trades much of country’s traditional armor for something more exposed. He can be tender where the genre expects toughness, modern where tradition might suggest otherwise, and deeply sentimental without slipping into nostalgia.

It’s not rebellion against the Williams name so much as an expansion of it.

SAM WILLIAMS LIVE AT PERSHING HALL IN AUSTIN

On Saturday, August 29, Sam Williams brings that story to Pershing Hall for an intimate night of live music in Austin.

And for an artist like Williams, the intimacy matters.

Songs this personal benefit from a room where there isn’t much distance between the person who wrote them and the people listening. Pershing Hall offers exactly that: no arena-sized remove, no binoculars required. Just a songwriter, a legendary family tree and the chance to hear where one of country music’s most recognizable names goes next.

Caroline Hale opens the evening, bringing her Austin-bred blend of indie pop, country and folk before Williams takes the stage.

Three generations into one of American music’s great family stories, Sam Williams isn’t trying to become the next Hank Williams.

He’s becoming the first Sam Williams.
